Bluefield State has been designated as a 2023 Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader.  On September 18, the U.S. Department of State announced that BSU was included as one of 19 HBCUs as “Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders” in recognition of their noteworthy engagement with the Fulbright Program during the 2022-23 academic year.

“Bluefield State University believes it is important to prepare our students to succeed in a dynamic global society,” noted BSU President Robin Capehart, who is also a former Fulbright Scholar, having taught Public Finance at Moldova State University in Chisinau, Moldova.   “We are grateful to the US Department of State for recognizing our internationalization efforts,” he added.

Bluefield State University’s Office of International Initiatives has sustained ties with the Fulbright Program since 2007. International Initiatives Director Dr. Sudhakar “Jammy” R. Jamkhandi, a former Fulbright Specialist in International Higher Educational Institutions from 2011 to 2016, noted: “It is good to be designated a Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader for the fourth year in a row.”

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs established the Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders Initiative in 2019 to recognize and commend the strong partnership between the Fulbright Program and HBCUs. This initiative is part of the U.S. State Department’s commitment to diversity and inclusion within the Fulbright Program and within the Bureau’s exchange programs overall.

Information on the Fulbright Program's diversity and inclusion initiatives is detailed on the Fulbright U.S. Student Program website.
